Theo Jansen is a Dutch engineer and sculptor. He creates large walking sculptures called Strandbeests made primarily out of PVC pipe. They are designed to walk on the beach utilising the wind and navigating on the sand without getting stuck. They move with a fluid motion that is almost anilmal in quality. They are absolutely beautiful machines. He has been working on this project for 16 years and originally started in effort to design something that could spread sand from the beach back onto the deteriorating dunes.
